Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) has revealed its strategic move in the sports arena with the creation of SRJ Sports Investments, a groundbreaking company dedicated to accelerating sports sector growth within the kingdom and across the MENA region.
The primary focus of SRJ Sports Investments lies in the acquisition and creation of intellectual property (IP) for innovative sports events, the procurement of commercial rights for sports competitions, and the endeavours to host prominent global events within Saudi Arabia. The intended result is not only significant financial gains but also the fostering of partnerships on local and regional fronts, as emphasised by PIF.
The company's ambitious agenda extends to cultivating fan engagement through distinctive activities and driving transformative advancements in sports technology across the industry.
Raid Ismail, the Head of MENA Direct Investments at PIF, expressed his excitement, stating, "We are thrilled to announce the establishment of SRJ Sports Investments Company to accelerate the growth of the sports sector in Saudi Arabia and the MENA region, by creating and investing in international sports IP, enhancing the fan experience through hosting major global events and investing in transformative technologies. The company will complement other PIF investments in the sports sector, all of which are contributing to a more vibrant society, in line with PIF’s strategy and Saudi Vision 2030."
Recent reports had indicated Saudi Arabia's intention to launch a multibillion-dollar investment entity under the PIF umbrella, dedicated to propelling the country's sports expansion endeavors. Notably, Premier League club Newcastle United and the LIV Golf Series, both under PIF ownership, will remain distinct from this new venture, according to sources
Saudi Arabia's involvement in various sports domains, such as golf, boxing, Formula One, snooker, and horse racing, reflects a broad spectrum of interests. The nation's ambitions stretch to establishing the Saudi Pro League as a premier domestic soccer league globally, with substantial player investments and recent high-profile acquisitions.
