Qiddiya Investment Co. Awards $1 Billion Contract for Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium Project

Qiddiya Investment Co., the developer behind Saudi Arabia’s ambitious entertainment and sports city, has awarded a $1 billion (SR4 billion) contract to a Spanish consortium for the construction of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium. The winning bidders, FCC Construction and Saudi firm Nesma & Partners, will build the facility just outside Riyadh.

Designed by US-based architectural firm Populous, the stadium will be located on a 200-meter-high cliff in Qiddiya’s sports and entertainment district. The project aims to establish a multipurpose venue that will be a centerpiece of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a strategic initiative focused on boosting tourism, creating jobs, and driving economic growth.

With the Kingdom also bidding to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, the stadium will play a key role in Saudi Arabia’s sporting infrastructure. The venue is expected to attract 1.8 million football fans and an additional six million visitors annually for other events, ranging from rugby, boxing, and mixed martial arts to esports and concerts.

The stadium will feature cutting-edge technology, including retractable flooring, a foldable roof, and a movable upper wall that opens to panoramic views of the surrounding region. Seating over 45,000 spectators, the facility’s design prioritizes versatility and guest experience, with plans for immersive digital displays and advanced climate control.

Notably, an eco-friendly cooling lake will be integrated into the stadium’s design, collecting rainwater and using an ice wall to cool the air, minimizing energy consumption. The stadium’s exterior will also boast 1.5 kilometers of display screens, adding to the venue’s visual appeal.

Unveiled earlier in 2024, the project is set to be a global landmark, further positioning Qiddiya as a top destination for sports, entertainment, and culture. This aligns with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s broader urban development vision for Qiddiya, positioning it as a world-class hub for global events.
