Madison Square Garden Sports, owner of the New York Knicks NBA franchise and the New York Rangers NHL franchise, is prepared to sell minority stakes in both. Forbes has valued the Knicks at USD6.1bn and the Rangers at USD2.2bn.
James Dolan, owner of the publicly traded MSG Sports, said there were no plans to sell a controlling share in either franchise, which would remain family-controlled assets.
The company discussed the possible sale while announcing revenues of USD353.7m in Q4 2022, an increase of 22 per cent on the same quarter in 2021. Selling minority stakes in the franchises is being interpreted as a liquidity move rather than the precursor to a full sale.
